Dorval Library Code Of User Responsibilities

The Library should be a welcoming and secure place where every user can have access to quality services and resources, and benefit from a calm environment that is conducive to research, study, and intellectual pursuits.

In order to maintain this environment, all Library users and/or individuals on the premises of the Library must respect the following rules:

                                                                                                                   

EFFICIENT SERVICE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

 

  • To register as a member, provide a valid proof of identity and of address. The membership of a youth under sixteen (16) years of age must be completed in presence of a parent or guardian.
  • Present your membership card to borrow documents before taking them out of the Library and to reserve equipment and rooms.
  • Report a lost or stolen membership card.
  • Assume responsibility for all documents borrowed on your card, including replacement and/or repair charges for lost or damaged documents. Parents are responsible for any charges incurred by their child.
  • Respect any library regulations communicated by library staff.

 

A CLIMATE OF RESPECT IN A SECURE ENVIRONMENT

 

  • Adopt respectful language and behaviour. It is prohibited to exercise any form of harassment or intimidation or to verbally or physically attack other users or employees.
  • Supervise all individuals under your responsibility. Above all, do not leave children under ten (10) years of age without the supervision of a parent, guardian, or babysitter.
  • Use computer equipment appropriately. The services may not be used for illicit purposes. It is prohibited to access, transmit, retrieve, or store information that is abusive, discriminatory, sexist, racist, offensive, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, or that could be considered harassment.
  • Do not consume, traffic in, or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while in the Library.
  • Circulate only in areas open to the public.
  • Do not bring animals into the Library with the exception of guide animals for individuals with a disability.
  • Refrain from contravening the City’s municipal by-laws as well as any provincial and federal laws in effect.

 

A WELCOMING, PLEASANT, AND CALM ATMOSPHERE

 

  • Speak in a low voice and work without disturbing the quiet.
  • Avoid using any device likely to create a noise level that will bother other users.
  • Keep cellphones on vibrate or silent mode and refrain from talking on the phone in the public areas.
  • Do not use sporting equipment such as skateboards, inline skates, balls, bicycles, etc. inside the building.
  • Obtain municipal authorization before distributing literature, conducting surveys, collecting signatures, asking for contributions, posting materials, taking photos, filming, making visual or audio recordings, etc. Commercial activity is prohibited in the Library.
  • Wear clothing appropriate for a public place. It is not permitted, for example, to enter without a shirt or shoes or in a bathing suit.
  • Have a personal hygiene that will not make others uncomfortable.

 

PREMISES, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT THAT ARE CLEAN AND IN GOOD ORDER

 

  • Only the consumption of beverages in closed containers, and snack foods, is tolerated. Any waste must be disposed of.
  • Use documents with care. It is not permitted to highlight, underline, annotate, cut, tear, fold pages, write on, or damage the materials in any other way.
  • Do not change the configuration of software or computers.
  • Do not attempt to repair or replace the documents yourself.
  • Do not displace, soil, or damage the furniture.

 

RESPECT THE COPYRIGHT ACT AND THE RIGHTS OF CREATORS

 

  • Do not copy or reproduce without authorization, on any medium, the written, acoustic, or visual content of a work.

 

SANCTIONS

 

  • Failure to comply with this Users’ Code may lead to expulsion from the premises and/or the loss of library privileges for a period of up to two (2) years, depending on the gravity of the violation(s).
